Spam Problems

Someone has been sending spam emails on "behalf" on Generation Debt. These messages, which look like a viral marketing campaign, have nothing to do with our website. While we appreciate people's efforts to make this legislative problem well known, we do NOT condone spamming.

I do not want to stop our readers from sending their student loan plight to your friends, family, congressperson, senator, or newspaper. However, I do wish that whomever has been spamming weblogs and making it appear as if Generation Debt is the source, please stop. There are better ways to get our story out there and we do not encourage unsolicited spam.

Website Problems

Well, we are on the mend. I'm sure that if any of you tried to use the site over the past week you discovered that not much was working. We aren't quite back to normal, but we will be soon (knock on wood for me please). I am hoping to have everything perfected by our two year anniversary (next Saturday the 10th).

Site Update

Just a quick note on the holiday... I've done an upgrade of the site software and a update of our spam blocking software. Hopefully this resolves some of the issues we've had lately with the site running a bit slowly. Happy Holidays to all!

Site notes

Just a little site maintenence/housekeeping type post.

  1. I may have unintentionally deleted some old comments in my continuous quest to keep blog spam off of this site. Please don't take it personally!

  2. Also, rest assured we are combing the news every day for anything relevant to post to keep you all updated. When we hear it, you hear it.

  3. I'm hoping to be able to do a little refresher on all of the pending legislation sometime this month (key word there is "hoping"). There just haven't been enough hours in the day lately, you know?

  4. Finally, who out there got a new representative out of the election? Now might be a good time to get in touch and apprise that new rep of the issue of student loan consolidation refinance and how it affects many constituents.

Support from The Lansing State Journal

Bruce Umpstead of the Lansing State Journal (Lansing, MI) wrote a great column in January about how the one-time consolidation rule has affected he and his wife. The article even name checks CollegeLoanAssistanceAct.org. Thanks for the help Bruce!

Our Neighbors to the North

Well, it appears we aren't the only Generation Debt out there. We stumbled across another website run by our lovely Canadian neighbors at generationdebt.ca. What a shock to find out their action is also in regards to higher education and tuition costs.

I guess the world can be united around one issue... the importance of education.

Who Are We?

Generation Debt was created by people who just want paying back student loans to be a bit easier. We created this site to be a resource for any and all who want to research the issue of student loan consolidation refinancing, who want to make some noise about it, and who want to get their loans paid off and move on with their lives.

Diana Lamphiere is an attorney who cringes when she writes out her loan-checks-that-only-cover-interest-and-make-no-dent-in-the-principal-but-still-cost-more-than-rent every month.

Gerry Garcia is not the reincarnation of the too-soon-lost Grateful Dead frontman, Jerry Garcia. But he is grateful to have gone to college and graduate school. And he's shocked by what a long, strange trip it's been, trying to get out of debt and going on to achieve the American dream -- all because of the student loans he, like so many young professionals, had to take out to finance his education.

Liz Schwartz is a progressive activist/art director who thinks the current student loan consolidation law is ridiculous. She believes Paul Wellstone had it right... "Politics is not about power. Politics is not about money. Politics is not about winning for the sake of winning. Politics is about the improvement of people's lives. It's about advancing the cause of peace and justice in our country and in our world. Politics is about doing well for people."

Please make sure to sign the online petition that will be forwarded to Congress, as well as utilizing our comments section to share news and ideas about this important issue. We want to make it as easy for you as possible to become involved.
