Link roundup
- TPM Cafe has an article opining that "federal student loans do more to subsidize banks than help students."
- Rep. John Boehner, Chairman of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, is one of the candidates for House Majority Leader.
- An article from The Christian Science Monitor, via ABC News, on young adults trapped by debt.
- And finally, the GAO reports that consolidating student loans exclusively through the Department of Education’s direct-loan program could save the federal government billions.
So far none of our bills have been reintroduced under new bill numbers for 2006, but I'm keeping an eye on Thomas billfinder so I can check them out as soon as possible.

A question for everyone: I just received junk mail from a student loan lender saying that it is possible to refinance already consolidated student loans, and that it will be illegal once S.1932 is passed. Both statements sound like hogwash to me--does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

The mail saying it's possible to refinance already consolidated student loans refers, I think, to a loophole that may allow people who consolidated with the Department of Education a slight interest rate reduction. It's worth a phone call to the lender to see if you can pin them down.
After skimming S. 1932 (which is massive), I didn't see any references to disallowing this possible practice by the Department of Education, but again, it's a huge bill full of jargon and I may be missing something.
